Ministries in the Church

Liturgical Arts

All liturgical arts are under the direction of the priest. There are two areas of ministry presently engaged: Music and Iconography. The music ministry is guided by the “Ecclesiarch” who gathers texts and music and coordinates the ministries of the Choir (which is under the Choir Director) and the Chanters. The ministry of iconography is being planned, with the long term goal of training iconographers who will express the faith in painted and carved images that will adorn the temple.

The Liturgical arts are not just “decoration” of the faith, but are at the heart of what it means to have faith. They are the very expression of theology as a gift and as graced and joyful approach to God’s awesome Glory.

Young Adult & University Chaplaincy of Milwaukee (UCM)

This is an outreach to current University Students at Marquette, UWM, & MSOE.

Our parish has provided regular chaplaincy to Marquette University since the 1980s. The Marquette OCF is named after Elder Aimilianos of Simonopetra, the elder of Archbishop Alexander Golitzin. who taught at Marquette for many years. This ministry is essential to ensure that Orthodox college students stay in the Church and feel supported in their faith.

charitable Outreach

At present the parish serves regularly at the Cathedral Center Shelter. Our charitable outreach is a necessary expression of our love for God and our neighbor.

Organizer:

Confession & Spiritual Counsel

This ministry is fulfilled only by the priest. It is necessary for all Orthodox Christians to regularly confess, preferably at least every two months. This benefits the person confessing, because it forces us to confront the reality of our sin and put our hope in God to remove our passions and heal us of our wounds. The priest stands as a witness and applies the Tradition of the Church and the scriptural and Gospel principles in giving spiritual counsel and helping us to evaluate our spiritual path.

Call or email Fr. Elijah to arrange to have confession.

Parish Council

The parish council is a body of officers elected at the parish annual meeting. It serves a fiduciary role for the parish and helps to organize community work for the maintenance of the building, and for the general up-building of the community.

Education, Catechesis, Youth

It is essential that all people in the Church learn without ceasing. Prayer itself and our participation in the Mysteries is a continual, covenanted commitment to growing in knowledge of God.

We offer Sunday School, Adult Catechesis, Adult Education, and a Men’s Study Group.

At present our Sunday School has classes for four age groups of students.

Catechesis is for those who are interested in learning more about Orthodoxy. Classes are taught by Fr. Elijah. Please contact him directly through email, phone, or text message.

Adult education consists of a study of the Holy Scriptures and the Fathers. These are conducted through Zoom. Please see church calendar for days and times.

There is also a bible study in the Church hall before Liturgy, which we call the “Emmaus” study.

The Men’s Study Group meets in-person during coffee hour one Sunday per month and weekly through Zoom. Check the church calendar for dates.

We have recreational youth gatherings throughout the year.

ecumenical & community organizing

The parish participates in local ecumenical gatherings. We pray for the unity of all Christians and gather with others to witness to the beauty of the Orthodox faith and to speak the truth in love. We also have parish members who have been involved in national and international ecumenical gatherings.

We also join with other local communities through MICAH, Milwaukee Inner City Congregations Allied for Hope, to advocate for common sense solutions that help the people of Milwaukee address injustices.
